Our History
Human history in Turkmenistan stretches back thousands of years. Early settlements developed near Ashgabat and the Kopetdag Mountains, leaving behind some of Central Asia’s oldest archaeological sites.

Over the centuries, Turkmenistan became home to great civilizations, including the Margush, Parthian, Khorezm, and Seljuk empires. Cities such as Merv, Nissa, and Kunya Urgench grew into major centers of culture and trade.
Turkmenistan stood at the heart of the Great Silk Road. Ancient trade routes crossed the country, linking East and West and bringing goods, ideas, and cultures together.
Today, these ancient cities and monuments remain an important part of Turkmenistan’s identity, offering visitors the chance to explore one of history’s great crossroads.
